TAG Truck Center

TAG Truck Center is a leading Memphis based freight truck dealership. With 10 full-service dealerships in five states, they are the authority when it comes to sales, parts and service for Freightliner, Mitsubishi and Sprinter trucks.

MSC worked with TAG Truck by providing civil engineering service, from layout to construction, for their modern $20 million Sales and Service facility constructed on the historic Mall of Memphis Site. After purchasing the 113 acre site, TAG utilized MSC for plat approval, construction document creation, engineering approval, and construction administration for the development of a 49 acre portion of the overall site.

Rex Brown Chemical Tank Farm

toteTankEntergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy Mississippi serves approximately 442,000 customers in 45 of Mississippi’s 82 counties. Entergy companies employ more than 2,000 people in the state and there are over 1,100 Entergy retirees living in Mississippi.

MSC was chosen to design a chemical tank farm facility at Entergy’s Rex Brown power plant in Hinds county. The client requested a facility that could accommodate multiple tote tanks and also be accessible by fork lift to change out tote tanks as needed. MSC created construction drawings and estimates to allow the client to quickly address their needs.

Facility Improvements

caterpiller-truckA leader in remanufacturing technologies and processes, CAT Reman returns products at the end of their lives (called ‘core’) to same-as-new condition and helps reduce owning and operating costs by providing our customers same-as-new quality at a fraction of the cost of a new part. Through the remanufacturing process Caterpillar reduces waste, lowers greenhouse gas production and minimizes the need for raw materials.

MSC aided CAT in the production and construction of infrastructure improvements for contingency planning in the event spills or mechanical failures resulting in the release of hazardous materials.

MSC’s efforts focused on three geographical areas of the plant containing discreet runoff basins.

Used Engine Staging Area – The prime concern for this area was storm runoff containing residual oil and chemicals from the core engines. MSC designed curbing, inlets and containment for stormwater exiting the site.

Tank Farm – This area was comprised of highly corrosive and hazardous materials that were frequently loaded and unloaded from various vehicles. MSC designed secondary containment for tanker trucks servicing the tank farm and also routed tank farm runoff through a containment structure with safety valves to capture chemicals in the event of a catastrophic spill.

Chemical Storage Area– MSC designed an HDPE lined pond to capture and contain runoff in the event of firefighting activities at the chemical storage area.

Recycling Center

waste-bulldozerWaste Connections (NYSE: WCN) is an integrated solid waste services company that provides solid waste collection, transfer, disposal and recycling services in mostly exclusive and secondary markets.

As Landfill Operator/Manager of Three Rivers Landfill, Waste Connections selected Mid-South Consulting for the design of a new recycling and convenience center for a large Subtitle D landfill in north Mississippi. Facility included two 40 cubic yard roll offs for municipal solid waste, 60 cubic yard roll off for scrap metal, white goods storage area, an E-Waste building and a used tire trailer.

MSC designed a facility with a footprint of approximately 1 acre that not only meets the immediate needs of the client, but also considers future needs such as reserved space for covered parking for maintenance vehicle and office space for potential landfill operations.

Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority Renewable Energy Study

The Three Rivers Regional Landfill is owned by Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority and is operated by Waste Connections.  The landfill is located approximately 2.5 miles northwest of the City of Pontotoc and is readily accessible from Mississippi State Highway 76.  The landfill began receiving Subtitle D waste in 1995. At this time, the landfill has a little over 3 million tons of MSW.

The management of landfill gas is considered by many as a financial liability that is driven by federal regulations.  The Authority took a proactive position toward landfill gas management and considered landfill gas as a potential revenue source because there is significant energy contained in the gas and energy has monetary value.

In view of the above, it was necessary to make every effort to cost effectively utilize landfill gas to optimize revenue and to reduce tipping fees of the landfill while simultaneously be good stewards of the environment by destroying greenhouse gases.  It was therefore the purpose of the study to identify cost effective projects that can utilize any collected and unused landfill gases at the Three Rivers Regional Landfill

electric_generatorThe Three Rivers Regional Landfill is owned by Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority and is operated by Waste Connections.  The landfill is located approximately 2.5 miles northwest of the City of Pontotoc and is readily accessible from Mississippi State Highway 76.  The landfill began receiving Subtitle D waste in 1995. At this time, the landfill has a little over 3 million tons of MSW.

As with all Subtitle D landfills, the decomposition of the solid waste within the landfill generates methane, carbon dioxide and other trace gases. While most landfills look at landfill gas as a burden, TRSWMA looked at landfill gas management as a revenue opportunity.  After significant research, the Authority decided to utilize the collected landfill gas to generate electricity.  In 2010, the Authority entered into a partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Pontotoc Electric Power Association (PEPA) under the TVA Green Energy Partners Program to provide green electricity to the TVA grid.  The 1 megawatt generator provides electricity to nearly 800 residential homes in the community.  This is a very unique project because during the planning and design phases, there was not a single operational landfill gas to electricity project in the State of Mississippi.

With a history of innovation spanning 91 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems; as well as a broad range of mission support services.

When Raytheon decided to expand their Forest, MS manufacturing facility by more than 20,000 square feet and hire 150 new workers, they chose Mid-South Consulting (MSC) to provide Civil Engineering design services. MSC was involved with all aspects of the project from opinions of probable cost to create a Pro Forma to submittal review and construction inspection.

The Raytheon expansion was particularly challenging because the proposed building site was situated in an area that was already developed with multiple underground utilities including, drinking water, fire suppression, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, electrical and gas.

To help mitigate constructions delays due to unknown underground utilities, MSC created a flexible design for utility relocations which pre-examined multiple routes so that rapid plan revisions could be completed as needed once ground breaking occurred and actual utility locations were encountered.  A comprehensive review of as-built drawings, provided by the client, along the use of Ground Penetrating Radar, also helped minimize encountering existing underground utility “surprises” that might have occurred during construction.

HWY 80 Improvements and Access Road

With a history of innovation spanning 91 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems; as well as a broad range of mission support services.

Existing demand along with substantial expansion planned for the future, led Raytheon to, again, turn to Mid-South Consulting for planning and design needs regarding an access road capable of handling numerous heavy truck movements.

The access road also required a new entrance to be designed for US Highway 80. After conducting a traffic impact study, MSC had to make considerable improvements to Hwy 80, as required by MDOT. Improvements included approximately 300 feet of left turn lane, accel lanes, decel lanes along with appropriate tapers and pavement markings.

Seamless coordination with the client, architect, and MDOT, produced a design that not only exceeds current needs, but keeps an eye on the future to allow Raytheon to expand with minimal cost and down time.
